Created in 1959 by a young Jean-Paul Guerlain, Vétiver was inspired by the scent of a gardener working at dawn—the raw earth, the dewy grass, and the faint aroma of tobacco floating in the morning air.
At the time, vetiver was rarely used as the hero ingredient in Western perfumery. Guerlain’s genius was isolating high-grade Bourbon vetiver from Réunion Island and balancing its damp, earthy roots with bright French citrus and dry tobacco. It single-handedly created the modern vetiver genre and has remained an unbeatable classic for over six decades.
