Mr. Burberry belongs to the Woody-Aromatic-Fougère family. It is celebrated for contrasting sharp, zesty herbal openings with a dark, structured woody foundation.
- Top Notes (The Zesty Herbal Spark): Grapefruit, Tarragon, and Cardamom. A sharp, luminous opening that blends crisp citrus with warm, aromatic spices.
- Heart Notes (The Tailored Core): Birch Leaf, Nutmeg, Cedarwood, and Lavender. A structured, smoky-green centerpiece that echoes the protective durability of gabardine fabric.
- Base Notes (The Noble Trail): Vetiver, Guaiac Wood, Sandalwood, and Benzoin. A dry, earthy, and warm foundation that lends a clean, long-lasting masculine presence.
The Origin: Inspired by the Black Heritage Trench Coat
Released in 2016, Mr. Burberry was created by legendary master perfumer Francis Kurkdjian under the creative direction of Christopher Bailey.
Kurkdjian wanted to craft a scent that felt like a olfactory counterpart to Burberry’s black trench coat—combining classic British perfumery ingredients (herbs and vetiver) with unexpected modern accents (birch leaf and zesty grapefruit). The result is a versatile fragrance designed to feel simultaneously relaxed and tailored.
The Trench Coat Flacon: The bottle design pays direct homage to the black heritage trench coat. The heavy, weighted black cap echoes the distinctive hand-carved horn-look buttons, while a hand-tied knot of English-woven black gabardine fabric—crafted in Castleford, Yorkshire—is wrapped around the neck of the bottle.
