Hermès Agar Ébène belongs to the Amber-Woody family. In true Hermès fashion, the formula is streamlined and minimalist, allowing high-grade natural woods to express their full depth without cluttered synthetic additives.

The Origin: Christine Nagel's Hermessence Vision
Released in 2018, Agar Ébène was created by Christine Nagel, who succeeded Jean-Claude Ellena as the in-house perfumer for Hermès. It formed part of her inaugural additions to the ultra-exclusive Hermessence collection.
Nagel wanted to reinterpret agarwood—an ingredient historically treated as dense, loud, and animalic—through the refined, understated lens of Hermès. By combining agarwood with ebony wood (Ébène), she achieved a texture that feels like dark cashmere or polished leather against warm skin.
The Leather-Crowned Flacon: The 100 ml bottle features the signature tall, heavy glass column of the Hermessence line with a thick, weighted base. The glass is subtly tinted in a deep smoky amber hue, topped with a luxurious saddle-stitched, plum-brown leather cap—a nod to Hermès’ historic equestrian leather heritage.
